Music Discovery Wants to Be Social

At moodmat we believe good music wants to be let out of the house without a category, shower or shave. We believe music wants to be let loose and run whatever new emerging media channels and “devices” it chooses infiltrate and takes root in the wild - from an 8-track jukebox to the latest smartphone. Let the people organize music for themselves, in ways meaningful to them, their friends and their context of use. Music wants to be free social. A lot of the most active listening and discussion of music is happening on social networks - kids these days!
Well they get it, especially the current generation of middle-schoolers and teens who first met music as a digital, networked experience. Check out my latest post on this topic - iTunes Finally Threaded into Social Network for more detail on the deal announcement and what else might follow.
I’ll be interested to hear from Bebo UK users and other social network members when this is fully rolled out: What do you think? What does an integrated iTunes widget do for you that you can’t do by other means today? How do you want to buy and discover music via your friends? Are any niche digital music retailers like Beatport, Bleep and eMusic making connections like this into the communities of their listeners? Is it adding value, or a marketing nightmare? What API’s do social networks around music need to offer the field of digital music retailers and widgetmakers? I’d love to know. Let the (socially recommended) bass kick.
