M83 on 89.9 = Nice
by Teep May 27, 2008 in musicians, radio, videoWe interrupt this movement08 broadcast to bring you the following video of current moodmat darlings, M83, performing live on Morning Becomes Eclectic — KCRW | 89.9FM on May 19th.
In this 30+ minute segment, the currently touring group featuring Anthony Gonzalez on vocals, guitar and keyboards, Loic Maurin on Drums, Pierre-Marie Maulini on guitar and Saturdays = Youth featured vocalist Morgan Kibby on vocals and keyboards, cruise through “epic stuff” like, Kim & Jessie, Skin of The Night, and an extended version of Couleurs.
In the middle there’s a shorty interview that offers nothing too groundbreaking but does serve as affirmation that this album is a flat out tribute to the 80’s, Saturdays, and teenage years in particular as “the best period of my life”.
From that above link, you can either choose to hear the audio alone - radio style, or watch the in studio visuals to catch a peek of them strapped up with Fenders, keying on Korgs and slapping the skins while delivering the live vocals… worth noting is how good the mix is, as it seems the KCRW Engineers have had plenty of experience doing this. I can say with authority, the only thing missing here is applause.

Nice. Going to see them live this Thursday at Chicago’s Empty Bottle. … Couleurs is the jam… up front drum machines firing away, sounds like it could have been a b-side extended mix of something off New Order’s _Technique_, and the tempo slow down for the last few minutes is genius. I’ll check out this live version. Frankly, no idea what to expect from a live show so this should be interesting.
Loving the new M83 album. Listen to the first part of “Graveyard Girl” and tell me that isn’t an homage to mid-80’s New Order.
Love the breathy female vox sprinkled all around as well. I don’t hear much “new music” I like, but this is a notable exception.
