Re-reading our assessment of Movement 2008, I narrowed in on the overall feeling that was nagging me for the last three or four days. It was the sense that the event didn’t extend beyond the perimeter of Hart Plaza. A lot of my regular peeps didn’t make it out this year, and there was a noticeable drop in international visitors. I’ve hosted people from as far away as Berlin, Ghent, London, Almelo and umm … Chicago. Not playing “techno tourist guide” this year was a bummer.
There wasn’t that shared excitement in the afterparties, the record stores, and all the other things I normally take for granted being so near the epicenter. Overall, I think I was feeling the same kind of disconnection from the city that Infinite State Machine mentions.
So I was really excited to happen upon this older post on detroitblog. I lost track of the feed in the last few years, but reconnecting with intimate tales of Detroit’s shrinking infrastructure as well as its sturdy institutions was a nice remedy to my residual funk.
I felt like someone had taken me on a trip to Damon’s.
